Domino’s has become a household name, not only in India, but across the globe. We are all acquainted with the Pizza chain which has now become part of our lives. But apart from the fact that we all are great fans of the pizza prepared by them, many of us don’t know about this chain.
Domino’s Pizza was founded by two brothers Tom Monaghan and James Monaghan in the year 1960 in Ypsilanti, Michigan that is located near Eastern Michigan University. They purchased an already running and existing pizzeria called DomiNick’s by paying a sum of $1,400. After 8 months, James sold his share to Tom because James, who was working as a mailman, didn’t want to quit his job.
By 1965, Tom grew his business and opened two more stores in nearby locations. Tom had invented an insulated pizza box of a new type that was the secret of the early success of the business. The USP of this insulated pizza box was capable of being stacked without getting crushed.
The original owner of the pizza store didn’t allow Tom to use the existing name of the chain at the new locations, so he changed the name slightly and made it Domino’s. The first franchise for Domino’s was sold in the year 1967, and within just 11 years by 1978 the store was opened at 200 locations; 1000 locations by 1983 and also one international outpost that was located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Today, the chain of pizza stores enjoys the position of being at the second position in the world after Pizza Hut with stores in more than 70 countries and 11,900 locations.
On an average, 1.5 million pizzas are sold by the pizza chain daily. Domino’s has kept on adapting new techniques and technology with innovations. The company started an innovative method of online and mobile ordering in 2007 in 2008 it started an online pizza delivery tracker. The company adopted a change in the name and logo in the year 2012. earlier it was called Domino’s Pizza but now it is just Domino’s. It has also kept on adding new products and side menus like pasta, bread bowls, calzones, toasted sandwiches, chicken wings etc. Domino’s has also started delivery in Indian Railways. Now anyone can order pizza from Domino’s while travelling through train in India. In India they also provide various deals and offers to keep ahead in the competition. Various coupon codes can also be used to redeem discounts on the purchase. You can also grab some latest Dominos coupons to avail the deals.
Here’s a list few lesser known facts about Domino’s:
1. The First 3 Stores Being Represented By 3 Dots in the Logo
The original plan of the owners was to add one new dot with the opening of one new store to the logo, but they abandoned the idea later on. Perhaps it was the inability to incorporate so many dots, within the logo, with the increasing number of stores.
2. James,The Co-Founder Sold His Share For An Old Volkswagen Beetle
James Monaghan, the co-founder of the pizza store was working as a mailman and did not want to quit his job and therefore he traded his share of 50% of the business to his brother Tom for an old Volkswagen Beetle. The Volkswagen was being used by the brothers to make deliveries.
3. Domino Sugar Had Sued Them
Domino’s was sued by Amstar, owner of Domino Sugar, in 1975 for trademark infringement. It was because their names were pretty similar. In 1980, the decision came in favour of the pizza chain.
4. From 1960 to 1989, The Menu Of Domino’s Remained Virtually Unchanged
During an expansion plan, Tom Monaghan, removed sub sandwiches from the original menu. But the combo of one pizza in two sizes, 11 topping options, and Coca-Cola remained unchanged till late 1980s. In the year 1989, the first new menu addition happened with addition of deep-dish pizzas to the menu at a cost of $25 million.
5. Free Sandwiches Were Being Offered To People Named Jared
To compete with the fast food chain Subway, Domino’s offered free sandwiches to anyone named Jared which was the name of the former spokesperson of Subway. The campaign was rolled out in the year 2008 when four special varieties of oven-baked sandwiches were offered free.
